ONE SECOND PORTRAIT
9.5 x 12 cm | Two series of 24
.
"The aim of Art is to present, not the outward appearance of things, but their inner
significance; for this, not the external manner and detail, constitutes true reality."
.
(Aristotle in Gordon C. Aymar, The Art of Portrait Painting, Chilton Book Co., Philadelphia, 1967, p. 119)
.
.
Since the beginning of time, history has been witnessing the need to represent
individuality. What is meant to be portrayed, regardless of the techniques or the
media that have been used, is more than the apparent surface, something closer
to the moral essence of the portrayed, more intimate than the obvious physical
characteristics or occasional accessories. A sense of timelessness is intended, getting
rid of the accessory and temporary in order to fix what is substantial and actually “real”.
.
Encased in the Meta-Media theme, the publication tests the limits of the media that
contain the message. Moving image is probably the most truthful way of representing
reality since it’s the one closer to our own sensory perception. By dissecting these video
portraits in 25 frames (one second) my intention is to verify that even with the slightest
temporal progressions there is a permanent and essential variable, the one that is,
in fact, the portrait.
